Peña del Arcipreste de HitaThe Sierra de Guadarrama offers very high cultural values, mainly considering its Socioeconomic Influence Area.

In terms of heritage, bridges, Churches, fountains, mills, laundries and other diverse constructions are featured and justify the visit to those Sierra villages. They are small jewels of our cultural heritage, much less known than the Great Core Heritages, but historic witnesses of this Sierra inhabitant’s quotidian life.

The sites of interest are grouped by villages or reference geographic environments. You may only select to visit the Madrid ones or the Segovia ones (for more information about the last, please contact the Patrimonio de Castilla y León web).

Sites of Cultural Interest

The Sierra de Guadarrama offers very high cultural values, mainly considering its Socioeconomic Influence Area.

The Sierra de Guadarrama and literature

The Sierra de Guadarrama presence in our literature heritage is at least as old as our proper literature. Perhaps the first reference is at “The Hunting Book” by Alfonso XI, which describes the hunting animals, where to hunt them, and which tracks to take to find them. Later on, many books from the Middle Age talk about the Sierra de Guadarrama, being probably the most relevant “The Book of Good Love” (El Libro del Buen…

Great Core Heritages

The natural barrier the Sierra de Guadarrama establishes and the unquestionable beauty of its landscapes have been determinant values without any doubt for Kings, aristocracy, and clergy to choose those mountains to build impressive and relevant constructions, such as defensive fortresses, monasteries or churches.Today, those great core heritages suppose an attractive added value for the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park visit, being a perfect backdrop landscape for those cultural scenarios.

Museums

In some of the National Park Socioeconomic Influence Area villages there are very diverse museums, pictorial, tapestries, glass, ethnographic and archeological collections and ski diffusion.

The man and the Sierra de Guadarrama

At the Roman Empire epoch, Segovia and Toledo were connected by a roadway crossing La Fuenfría Pass. In this area its tracing coincides with “the old road to Segovia”, climbing the pass at the Madrid side skirting along the slope. The pavement crossing the Enmedio Bridge (Puente de Enmedio) was built in the 18th century and corresponds to a cattle track named “Cañada de La Fuenfría”. Within the National Park several cattle tracks are catalogued.…
